Ballantines Original Hotel
The hotel is an original 1930's building which was added to in the 1950's.
The architecture is typical of Palm Springs, and it has the unique feature of a Bermuda style
roof around the quadrangle courtyard. Established
in 1938, this hotel was a relaxing hideaway to such notable guests as Marilyn Monroe, Veronica Lake,
Gloria Swanson and Hugh O'Brien. Various stories exist about Marilyn's favorite room - now
named Pretty in Pink Suite. The area in which the hotel is situated is "uptown" Palm Springs
and is close to The Racquet Club where many celebs used to stay and party in its hey day.
Marty and Barb Cohen are the owners of Ballantines Original Hotel.
They also own the Shore House at Lake Tahoe, a Select Registry Inn at the water's edge at Lake Tahoe. Much has been written
about Ballantines since its opening. "Kitschy glam meets modernist chic at Ballantines - The Original."
Conde Nast Traveler, June 2000. Marty and Barb intend for Ballantines to continue to be the Coolest Place to Stay in Palm Springs.
The furniture and design is sourced from designers such as Ray & Charles Eames, Bertoia,
Miller and Nelson, among others. Accessories such as the 1950's radios, chenille bedspreads,
melmac plates and chrome toasters add to the authenticity of this refurbishment. The music around the pool is
very much of the era - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Ella.
The 13 rooms are themed. The Pretty in Pink Suite has a dinette and dressing room and is
filled with artwork and photographs of Marilyn Monroe. Others, such as The Audrey Hepburn,
Rebel Suite, African 50's & Palm Springs rooms are graced with original artwork and
period photographs. Many rooms have private patios and kitchenettes. Blue Astroturf
surrounds the pool and outside patios and links the whole blue theme together.
Vinyl and Formica are featured throughout.
Glowing press reviews from the LA Times to Conde Nast Traveler (UK & USA) have
raved about the hotel. In addition, several of the top glossies have had fashion
shoots at this location and the hotel has been featured in the international press.
