Ballantines Original
If sleeping where Einstein snoozed isn't cool enough, how about nodding off in the powder-pink
bedroom of Marilyn Monroe? You can do that at Ballantines Original, one of two vintage properties
revitalized by two 1950s buffs from Great Britain, Sarah Robarts and Fraser Robertson. The Marilyn
suite is pink to its core, from the chenille bedspread to the rotary phone. It's easy to picture
the mercurial diva lounging in a plush robe on her private patio or primping at the rose-lit
vanity before a swank dinner with Dean, Frank, and their Rat Pack pals at the Racquet Club.
The New York Times: January 14th 2001, By Bernard Weinraub
"Palm Springs perks up and polishes its architectural gems ...Ballantines, the first hotel in
Palm Springs to embrace kitsch and mid-century modernism. The 14 rooms, many quite small, as well
as suites, are filled with period furniture by Eames, Knoll and others...
San Francisco Magazine: (Design Issue), February 2001, By Heidi Lender
"They're Back, Baby ...No mecca of mid-century style would be complete without a temple to the time.
And Ballantines Original, the first in a new chain of small, affordable hotels, is playing that role
in Palm Springs. Lovers of kitsch are talking about the full-on 50's treatment-the blue Astroturf
pool deck, pink-paletted Marilyn Monroe room, marshmallow sofas, shag rugs, classic plastic radios,
and array of rooms as Technicolor as a Disney cartoon..."
Brentwood Magazine July/Aug 2000, By Kathryn Harris
"Summer Getaways... it is a welcome addition to the retro renaissance in the desert resort,
whose legendary glamour was in danger of becoming vanquished by Southwestern tackiness...
All of the rooms have been painstakingly tricked out with hard-to-find authentic 50's chic..."
Los Angeles Magazine Best Boutique Hotels, October 2000, By Christine Spines
"...Now the brand-new Ballantines, an immaculately designed, 14-room hotel that bills itself as
"the coolest place in Palm Springs," is tripping the radar of urban aesthetes in need of high-style
languishing... The time travel vibe continued outside and felt most potent while I was floating
on a pink raft in the 80-degree pool, listening to a steady stream of snoozy tunes..."
Woman's Journal, London, UK May 2000, By Anthea Gerrie
"Welcome to The Hotel California... Its famous guests have included Marilyn Monroe and Gloria
Swanson. Now, this cult 1950's hotel, restored by a young British couple, has once again become
an oasis of glamour in the desert..."
Conde Nast Traveller April 2000
"Word of Mouth... Palm Springs once an exclusive getaway for harassed movie stars... Ballantines
Hotel is a classic example of Palm Springs modernist architecture. Rooms are also kitted out with
original artwork from films including Some Like It Hot and post-war radios, toasters,
and bedspreads..."
